Matt attended Davidson College where, because there wasn’t an architecture program, he studied math. “About the only thing I was doing well in junior high was art, so I figured out I wanted to be an architect in junior high,” he says. Matt comes from a long line of academics, ministers and farmers, but knew from an early age that he’d break that mold. We always want to pursue our work like this-we don’t want ever want to lock into something and think we have it figured out and be resistant to change just because it’s easier to stay the course.” “The last 18 months have been a process of omitting options and defining exactly what we’re after … every surprise presents an opportunity to make our work and our firm better. “Eighteen months ago we were sitting in Erin’s kitchen with two laptops and no work, having just left the most highly recognized architecture firm in the state, a week away from our career project, the AIA, starting construction, and we were thinking, ‘What the hell have we done?’” Despite a shaky economy and general uncertainty that accompanies any new business, to Matt, the leap has been worth the risk. Matt and Erin started collaborating while working at Frank Harmon Architect PA, which they left in 2010 to start in situ studio. “People spend so much time focused on the economy and how hard things are, so what better thing to do than spend a bunch of your money on a big party to celebrate your clients and all the people that you’ve worked with and turn the tide on it?” “We wanted it to be a big community event to say, ‘We’re still here, we love what we are doing, we’re really committed to Raleigh and we really appreciate all the people we’ve worked with.’ Matt and Erin joined friends and clients in celebrating the first anniversary of in situ studio in October of 2011.
